The Very Idea Makes Me Want To Vomit!

so josh officially announced at work on Monday that he is not returning to teach this fall because has has been accepted to The University of North Texas for his Phd. At first i was really excited about the prospect. then i remembered my life.

It has taken me since November 2008 to get all of em's services set up. that is 7 months! the thought of moving and having to set up all new CDSA services AND find new specialist is enough to make me ball up in the corner and rock back and forth. typing it even gives me anxiety. i have counted it up. this move means i will have to meet/screen at least 11 medial professionals! i have not even factored in the fact that i might not like some of them and will have to talk to more.

i think the two i am the most upset about leaving are her PT and her pediatrician. both are amazing and i know i will never find anyone like them for her. they both know me well and know i am doing what is best for Em and they help me achieve that.

i have so much more emotional stuff about this issue but my brain has put a "protection block" to help me survive until i really have to do it. thank goodness.

Spring Recital/Ballet

Isabella just finished her spring dance performances. she had so much fun in dance this year and we will be sad to have the summer off. she has been dancing around the house non stop since we started classes last fall. luckily we were able to get her there most of the time with everything going on. we have had some wonderful helpers. we took a ton of pictures so i will only show a few. she has made some really great fiends in dance this year. it was the only time she got out of the house during the week.

Here is Isa with one of her best friends Kendall. You might remember her from the Nutcracker pics from the Christmas Ballet.

Until recently Isa called this little girl number 11 because that was her mark on the floor. i told her she had to know her actual name for her birthday invitations. It's Caroline. It is amazing how kids can be great friends and not know each other's names.

Believe it or not Annika is 4 years old. She is adorable and is usually the front of all the line so we can see her.

All the girls had to wear socks over their tap shoes so they wouldn't slip back stage. they were all disappointed that they couldn't tap their shoes until they were on stage.

They were trying to be really patient while they waited to go on stage. there was a lot of "she's touching me!" the two little girls next to Isa are about to go at it for rubbing each other's glitter off. Girl fight!

Her is Oyster Isabella skipping on stage to meet her friend oysters.

They all wave to the last oyster (#11).

More waving.

Then they start they oyster dance. skipping in a circle.

London bridges.

More skipping.

"pushing" the walrus.

following the walrus. just in case you are wondering, no, they oysters don't get eaten. they push the walrus and the carpenter off the stage in the end.

Isabella's favorite park is at the end when they can all get on stage and dance as much as they want. we always do her flower pictures up there. it makes her feel like a big ballerina.

Big Ballerina pose.

this is Miss Catherine, Isabella's teacher, as the cat from Peter and the Wolf. she did a great job and Isa always loves finding her in the ballet.

The is the Alice ballerina. She did a great job.

Miss Catherine's mom owns the studio and she has like 4 sisters. this is one of them. she was a wonderful duck in Peter and the Wolf.

Cheshire cat. The did a really cool thing with a black light and a guy in black lifting her so it looked like she was flying and flipping around.

The Ballerina that played the butterfly is amazing. Isabella saw her part in the nutcracker during dress rehearsal and decided that she was going to be a ballerina that gets tossed too. side note her name is megan.

All in all i am soooooooooooooo glad we did ballet this year. Isabella has her ice cream party this week and then it's over. so sad. she was a trooper about having her hair put in curlers 5 times between all the dress rehearsals/performances/picture days we have had.

10 years off my life

so i was having an average day. Isabella was doing her spelling test while i did an oral feed with Em. normal enough. Em did great tasting her bananas and i picked her up to go hook her up to the feeding pump. that is when it happened.

first of all, for those of you who don't know. em's g-tube is a hole that goes through her side and then through a hole in her stomach. there is a round valve on the outside that is held in place on the inside by a balloon filled with water or air. from there, a cord called an extension hooks the
g-tube up to the feeding pump. Em eats frequently so we leave this cord attached to the g-tube all the time because it is uncomfortable to take on and off.

i picked Em up as i was standing. i didn't realize that her cord was stuck in a crack of the high chair. i have accidentally pulled on the extension before. it really hurts her so i got really upset when i realized i had done it again. i yelled and took her over to the living room to change her out of her banana clothes. whenever i pull the extension i always put my hand on her stomach to make sure the g-tube is still there. when i did it this time i felt nothing. i felt some more, wondering if the gauze was to thick to feel it. i pulled her onesie up and all remember seeing was blood. i froze. it took me a second to register what had happened. then i saw the g-tube . it was laying on the floor with her onesie. a million thoughts popped into my head most of which are to graphic to post here. at one point though i actually thought "Megan this isn't so serious. everyone will laugh at you and say you didn't even need to go to the Dr." after considering this for a minute i decided that it was indeed a big deal and if anyone tried to tell me it wasn't they would get very very hurt! the balloon of water was still full which meant i had pulled something the size of a gumball through a hole the size of a nail head. at this point i almost threw up.

since the balloon was still filled with fluid i couldn't put it back in. i scrambled around and found a syringe. i fumbled and got the water our of the balloon. the thought of sticking anything through a hole in some one's side petrified me, much less my helpless baby, so i tried to just put it in before i thought about it to much. it didn't go in very easily so i had to twist it a bit. this just made Em scream even more. i got it in on the second try.

somewhere is the middle of everything i was apparently giving Isa instructions. she turned up with Aunt Terra and her shoes and socks on. Terra was great and held a clean burp cloth over the newly inserted g-tube because i was sure it was still gushing blood (it wasn't). i then took a few deep breaths because i realized i hadn't in awhile. em was no longer screaming. just whimpering. i gave her a chewy and she calmed down a bit more.

i then called the doctor and the emergency room. ER wouldn't give any info and wouldn't even tell me if i should brig her directly there or her Dr first. the whole Dr office was at lunch and not answering the phone so we taped down the g-tube and piled in the car to meet them at the door after lunch. Terra in the mean time had called her brother in law Jim. YAY for Jim. he just finished nursing school and is a pediatric nurse. he was great at being thorough with his questions as well as keeping us calm. i owe him a present!

i walked into the Dr office and didn't even finish my sentence of " my daughter has a g-tube and i accidentally pulled it out and the ER..............." before the nurse was taking me through the door. the Dr was in our room with in 30 seconds. we are friends and he could see that i was very frazzled. he was great as always and told me i did a great job. as stupid as it sounds that made me feel a ton better. Em was smiling at him happy as could be. until he had to take the tape off. apparently i went a little over board. in the process of examining her the g-tube cam out again since i hadn't re-filled the balloon. i totally freaked out but it ended up being a good thing because they were able to clean the little bit of blood that had come out off her stomach. ( i could have sworn there was more). she cried a bit when he put it back in but then calmed right down. she actually cried longer when she got her shots.

all in all she was cleaned up good as new. so far i can't tell anything even happened to her. she is happy smiling and using her abs just fine. poor Isabella got really scared during the whole thing. understandably so since i was freaking out and her sister was bleeding but we worked it out. i am able to keep a good eye on her emotionally since this all started. The doctor was saying how much easier it will be next time. i almost threw up again when he said that.

josh thinks it is to hard to picture what the g-tube looks like so here are some pictures. sorry they are tiny. i just couldn't bring myself to sift through all those pictures of different kinds of g-tubes pre and post surgery. not today.

this is what it looks like on Em on the outside (obviously).

this is the whole thing with the balloon inflated. that is what i found on the floor in her onesie.

A Scary Glimpse

as the time grows near that we are "cleared" to leave the house i have mixed feelings. it has been really inconvenient to be stuck at home all the time. i have only been to church like three times in the last 8 months. i can't hang out with friends and poor Isa is/has gone crazy. i can't go to the grocery store even if i wanted to. i can't pick up medicine. My only "friends" are doctors and therapists.

most people who know me are aware of my anxiety and desire to become a hermit. so in some ways this has been a dream come true. i not only got to stay inside away from everyone but the doctor said i had to. now, i know it isn't healthy to become a hermit and i usually have some things i make myself do to maintain a small desire to go out and be with people. the problem is that all those things involved actually going out. which i wasn't able to do. so i pretty much lost my drive to maintain any semblance of normality.

i think one of my huge fears is that i will have worked so hard to keep Em healthy all winter and then she will get crazy sick the first time we go out. or that everyone will think it doesn't still matter to try and keep her germ free and assume that the cold they are "getting over" wont harm her. i also fear the fact that so many people haven't been able to see her that there will be a flood of "me next" and "my turn" or "you really should". i can barley deal with parading/passing around of my kids normally but now all i want to push people down and run. why would they think they have any rights to my children?

it is weird how animalistic i feel about the whole thing. my very heart feels bruised, battered, beaten and broken. this had caused me to go into "protect my offspring" mode. this mode can be annoying, disruptive and unacceptable to some. the good thing about this mode however is that i no longer care about the passive aggressive guilt trips layed by so may. the bad part is that i just no longer care. so when a situation arises that needs real consideration i just ignore it or become hostile. i know, not so pleasant.

Maybe this should have been a journal entry? oh well.

a lot of people have told me "don't worry, Em is so little she wont remember any of this" and while i am grateful for that the problem is this. i don't want to remember it either! it is all i think about. when i am not thinking about what she needs right now to keep her out of the hospital i just can't seem to get the day they moved her into the PICU and she had every tube you can think of attached to her out of my head. or the day she turned blue during her hearing test. or the day i sat sobbing the the O. R. waiting area while they maimed my daughter's stomach forever.

when i was younger i would have horrible nightmares almost every night. it got the point that i would stay up all night for fear of falling asleep and entering the terrible worlds my brain would create. i actually live in one of those worlds now . it never ends. At least i knew when the night would end. i actually long for those nightmares now.

Dinner Conversation?

Josh: Son of a....

Isa: Gun. you should say son of a gun instead of son of a b!@#$. (josh has never said that).
At this point she got up to go check something. i called her back to the table.

Megan: where did you hear that word?

Isa: I don't know.

Megan: then how do you know it isn't a good word?

Isa: i just do. B!@#$ is a bad word. guns are ok b/c you can protect yourself with a gun.

Megan: where did you hear that?

Isa: the news.

just to make everyone feel better we did have a talk with her about B!@#$.

My Workout

so i have desperately been trying to lose my baby weight from Emmeline and have been making progress. the problem is that this morning we had cinnamon rolls since it was a snow day. so i had to do something i don't normally do. workout. i really hate working out since i had Em. i just don't have the physical of emotional strength to do it but today i couldn't avoid it. well, i was able to find a workout that i had a blast doing and it was a great one. here are some pictures.

Here is the unshovled driveway.

Me in a snow drift.

the handiwork of me and my Father. this is only about 1/4 of our driveway.

It looks like a snow plow did this. it is at least three feet high.

These are the exact same kind of car. my dad had tried to get out earlier today and failed. the cars are hard to find.

A Little Backed Up

I just got the pictures my sister took at Emmeline's blessing so i thought i would share. she was almost 3 months old before we could bless her. we had permission to do it in the hospital but i just couldn't. it was like if i did it meant that she wasn't coming home. anyway, we decided to do it after she had been home for a couple of weeks to make sure it got done in case she had to go back to the hospital again. She was blessed in the dress that me and all my sisters and Isabella have been blessed in. mom found that cute sweater for her. it is so tiny. i was thrilled that one of the bracelets and headbands that Whitney made me matched the sweater perfectly so she got to wear those too. over all very cute.

Sleeping while i make dinner. pretty cute accessories huh?

Big eyes.

more big eyes.

Smily.

Watching people

Grandmama and Appy.

Mommy and Em. even the passy matched.

Watching more people. she really likes to know where everyone is.

Daddy and Em. we have a picture that is almost the same for Josh and Isa.

HAPPY 5 MONTH BIRTHDAY!!!

Emmeline is 5 months old today. i wont even try and explain how i feel about it or reflect back on things. well, other then posting now and then pictures.

i think she looks so warm and cozy in this picture. it makes me sleepy.

This is her all dressed up to go home. this wasn't the actual outfit that i brought to bring her home in. the one i had was much to large. or maybe she was much to little.

This is actually the outfit i brought to bring her home. i got isabella a matching sweatshirt that says " i am the big sister" for them to wear but Emmeline's whole body wasn't even as long as the oneies.

Here are the cute sisters. Emmeline's cheeks look huge when she is sitting up. i guess because they hang down. isabella LOVES being a big sister and wants to hold/smother her all the time.

Emmeline's Sparkly

The whole family went to Winston-Salem yesterday to get Emmeline's hearing aid. we were all really excited. The first thing the audiologist said was how tiny the earpiece was. she said it was the smallest one she had seen. I was really worried about how Em would react to it since she hated having things in her ears for all the testing. she did really well though. she actually seems to like having it in better then out. she defiantly looks around more. we got a whole kit of stuff to take care of the hearing aid. Isabella really liked all the things that came with it designed to help kids adjust to having a hearing aid. since Emmeline is so small she didn't really care about that stuff so Isa got to play with it.

Here is the whole set. it has all kinds of goodies.

Here are some stickers to decorate the side of her hearing aid. Also batteries and you can see the top of her toupee tape. this helps keep the aid in place if it starts to flop. you can also see the edge of her Oliver the elephant case.

This is her black holder for the hearing aid. the white container with Oliver on it is a dehumidifier. it is very important to put the hearing aid in there at least for the night. this keeps it very dry. even a little sweat can make it stop working. next we have a battery tester. below that is her hearing aid and the earpiece. the bulb is for blowing any moisture out of the earpiece if we need to wash it. the little pink round thing goes in the dehumidifier. the tube in the bag is and earpiece for josh and I to test the hearing aid with from time to time to make sure it still works. below that is something like a passsy holder. it attaches to the hearing aid and clips to the child's clothes so they wont lose it if it falls off.

Here is a close up of her hearing aid. we chose blue with glitter for the earpiece. we will get a new one about every month or two so i can pick a new color when ever i get bored. the actual aid will be the same for years.

Here she is the first time we put the hearing aid on her. they just made a new hearing aid that is smaller. thankfully they determined that her hearing loss is stable so she was able to get the smallest one they offer. the micro. otherwise she would have looked pretty silly with a regular one. it would have looked huge. she can't wear it all the time since if things get close to it gives feedback and she isn't sitting up yet. we put it on her whenever we can she she seems to like it. hopefully she will be sitting up soon. then she will be able to wear it whenever she is awake. pretty cute if i say so myself.
