The Science of Covering a Beatles Song

Josh has started watching American Idol (occasionally). this week they did Lennon/McCartney songs. I had serious problems with this. maybe because my sister and i were/are pretty obsessed with the Beatles. Maybe it's because American Idol singer suck. i don't know for sure. either way i was appalled with the song tonight. here is why:

when you cover a Beatles song you are messing with a beast. you can't do exactly what they did. if you did why cover it. however you can't totally change it either. it is like repainting the Mona Lisa but giving her a beard and piercing her nose. you just don't do it. it quite frankly turned my stomach.

overall very disappointing. i'm not sure what they were thinking. maybe they thought it was a good way to weed people out. if so they are smarter then i thought.

I'm a huge AI fan, but I totally agree with you on this. I didn't like any of them, but I thought the best of the worst was probably Amanda (skunk hair). And poor David A, who is supposed to be winning the whole thing, FORGOT THE LYRICS. These kids are just too young to appreciate the Beatles.

Oh, come on. Mona Lisa would look AWESOME with a little bling on her nose!

You'll have to skip next week, then because I think they are doing those kinds of songs again!

As a singer, when you perform a song you are supposed to have made that song "yours" in some way or another. The song usually ends up aweful when the singer tries to immitate another singer. A song redone well will touch you in some way becaus the singer will have made it personal and that reaches the audience more that what that singer's voice sounds like. I am having a brain far t on the name, but take that dude who sings Going to Carolina in My Mind". He doesn't have an outstanding voice but his expression is so real and personal - he brings songs to life. I LOVE singing. Can you tell?

I would like to see the Mona Lisa in a tuxedo T-shirt because that would say "hey, I came to party".

Megan you crack me up. I guess I'm lucky I missed that episode except for one song by Brooke White. Remind me to tell you a funny story about her that I think you'd appreciate:)
